Although it's downright painful to get up freakishly early on a Sunday morning (4 am if you do it right), the payoff on Easter Sunday in my neck of the woods is this:
Then you get to go home and nap. And eat with family. And count your blessings, no matter your religious persuasion.

Reading this overwhelmed me with a sublime moment (many, actually) of perfection.
There really are no words to say how moved I am. So I won't use any.
But I will ask you this: Would you tell in a comment (or maybe even a post) a time when a person reflected yourself back to yourself, causing you to sob with verklemption?

It's very difficult to pluck just one perfect moment from the past 48 hours, so I'll choose the one that has a photo to go with it.
Saturday was a magical day. I woke up in Melissa's home and drank coffee while hanging out with Josh and the twins. Melissa and I then hit the road for her very special place, Shepherdstown, home of the Little House. We dined, we gabbed, we basked in the day's perfection.
Shepherdstown is now my very special place, too.
After driving through Harpers Ferry and stopping for water ice with ChickieNob and the Wolvog, I met Lindsay to attend and Ingrid Michaelson concert. It wasn't just awesome, it was Jauss-ome.
And this morning, Lindsay, Mel and I met Paz, Calliope, and m for brunch. Sitting in the presence of women I've longed to meet for so long was absolutely wonderful.
I feel I might burst from the sheer volume of all this perfection.
But I won't.

While I was working at home one day, Tessa set up her "desk" and began writing furiously, getting her thoughts down the way Mommy sometimes does.
I forgot about it until the next day, when I noticed this, which gave me a glimpse into Tessa's mind, and an absolutely perfect moment.

Back when I started observing Perfect Moments (2 years ago this week), I became aware of the Perfect Moment Project, which was doing something similar. Authored by Robin and Sue, the PMP was "an ongoing project to gather and share stories, photos and other memories of those times when the world seems at peace."
Robin and I became friends on Twitter and Facebook and checked in with each other regularly. Online.
But this past Monday, Robin was in town to visit her mom, so I got to MEET her. And her delightful mom.
You'd never know from her demeanor that Robin is a Big Shot in the field of journalism. She's recently taken a position as Web Managing Editor for BusinessJournalism.org. She's on faculty at Arizona State University, and has also served at Columbia University. She is one of the success stories in dragging traditional media into the emerging realm of new media.
And she glows with an inner light. She is a woman at peace with herself, and fully able shine that peace on others.
In other words, I am sure she deposits perfect moments into people's accounts all over the place.
Here is photo evidence of me with Robin's mom, Joyce. And with Robin herself. It was a perfect lunch in all ways (note the salt-caramel & chocolate ice cream in the cup).

I checked out a Black-Eyed Peas CD from the library and listened to one song over and over again while out and about with the kids this weekend (not many of the songs are appropriate for young ears).
It's a happy-happy feel-good song, and I wanted to share the video with the kids when we got home. But often, an official video isn't appropriate for young eyes. So I knew a preview was necessary.
Good thing.
Instead, I found this, which is a happy-happy feel-good video. Watch it before you read my commentary, below.

I love it because while contrived, it speaks of the power of one person following her bliss at the risk of looking like a lone fool.
And then a wave of 20,000 people following the bliss, as well.Tessa and I are now learning the dance moves, in case we one day find ourselves in a flash mob.
Perfect.

Y'all know about my passions. My family, yoga, blogging, and exploring the complexities of open adoption. A few months ago, I fell into a new one.
I was late one Saturday morning to a class at the gym so I decided to take the next one. It had always looked waaaaay too far above my athletic abilities, both in endurance and in coordination.
It was a TurboKick class. And even though I was intimidated, this is my year of facingfears, so I decided to go in, hang out in the back, and get through it the best I could.
Did I mention I hadn't been in an aerobic-type class in more than a decade? That I really hate to sweat? That I always assume others are better than I am and will laugh at me?
No matter. I went in. And LOVED IT! I had never ever thrown a punch before. Now I knew four different kinds. Plus four different kinds of kicks, to boot (haha). A dozen classes later, I still don't look as boxing-ring-ready as the instructor does, but my form is slowly getting better.
I feel my body changing. I'm stronger in my core. I can give more longer. And it just feels good. I feel powerful.
Who woulda guessed that jab + cross + hook + uppercut = perfect moment?

I drove Tessa and Reed over the Colorado mountains to pick up their Dad after his day of skiing, and for the four of us to continue on to the western part of the state to visit my sister and her family.
We headed into the mountains, leaving the metro area behind us. Twenty-five minutes into the drive, just past this shrine, Reed, wide-eyed with wonder, piped up from the back seat.
"Mom," he said earnestly, "The world is so beautiful. I am so glad to be alive! Aren't you?"
.
.
.
(let that sink in. it was glorious, being reminded of all the beauty around me, physically and spiritually.) .
.
.
Oh, yes, Reed. Moments like these, seeing through your eyes, moving through life with you and your sister and your dad...yes I'm ecstatic to be alive.
(Five miles later I was back to "Quit fighting with each other -- don't make me stop this car!")
We've got to take these moments when we get these moments.

Regarding the title: well, kinda sorta.
Fifteen years ago when I proposed to Roger, we didn't want to spend a lot of money on wedding stuff. Instead we wanted to shoot our wad backpacking for a month through Greece and Turkey. So we economized on my engagement and wedding rings.
See, there had been a past, uh, relationship on my part, one that involved a ring with a small diamond. When I was 21, a boy asked me to marry him. It did not occur to me to say no (I thought marriage was what you did after college).
The ring was so pretty and the boy was so charming. The "no" became clear a couple of years later, at which time I was sad I had to stop wearing the ring. It stayed in a box in my drawer for many years, a literal hidden gem.
Fast forward to my true Mr Right. He was, in fact, SO right that he didn't mind if I recycled my cherished ring. If fit in with our plans to not go overboard with "stuff,"and to invest more in the marriage than in the wedding.
So we took the setting (on the right) and added a beautiful lavender tanzanite, and voilà -- engagement ring. Then we took the small diamond and added a band (with one to match his), and voilà -- wedding ring (on the left). They were simple and beautiful and suited me.
We had always talked (and by "we" I mean "I") about getting me a fancier ring for our 5th anniversary, to honor the kids we'd surely have.
Well, the 5th went by and the 10th went by and darn if kids aren't expensive. Other priorities came up and it didn't seem appropriate to spend on my wants rather than my family's needs.
Now the 15th anniversary looms later this year. The stars aligned recently for me to get a ring to celebrate this stage of my life, so I mySELF went to Jared's to see what they had. I wasn't impressed.
I found an online jeweler that allowed me to design a ring with diamonds (tiny) for Tessa's birthmonth and amethysts for Reed's. In addition, their names are etched onto faces of the band, like this sample (which has sapphire stones):This is my new bling, which honors my family, and makes me feel perfectly loved.

Somebody washing my hair, massaging my scalp, finding the perfect color and giving the perfect cut.
What made this visit to my new hairstylist even better was that I also got catch up with my friend, my family member, Crystal,* who is in training at an upscale salon.
She's so beautiful, don't you think? This is where Tessa gets it.
* Crystal is my daughter's first mom. ====================================

One of my favorite sayings is Leap and the net will appear.
Of course, it's meant to be a metaphorical statement. Leaping into unknowns like college, marriage, parenthood, adoptive parenting and other opportunities that come our way. Somehow, we are presented with a net, usually after we leap.
But this week I got the literal meaning.
Late last summer I took my kids to Jungle Quest, a place for kids to swing from vines, zipline across a room, and climb a rock wall. Tessa and Reed looked like they were having so much fun that I decided the next time we went, I would also harness up and fly through the air.
Which was easier said than done. The whole family went this week on the MLK holiday. I had butterflies while the Jungle Quest guy put the harness on me. Even at the lowest platform, I had a very difficult time leaping off.
But I did it. And soon, I liked it.
I don't know why letting go is so hard sometimes. But doing so often leads to perfect moments.

==================================== If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you know that I made it to the Xanax on Wednesday and actually got on the table to go under the laser at Denver Eye Surgeons.
Yes -- I, Lori, the Biggest Chicken in the World, did LASIK. On one eye. The other will remain uncorrected and will serve as my reading eye.
As you may recall, last Fall over on Mile High Mamas I told about how I came to even consider LASIK. Shortly, I'll post over there my recollection of the procedure itself (with the help of Tami, my sister/driver/unXanaxed repository of my immediate memory), and my evaluation of its benefits.
But here's a sneak preview in the music below. I felt elation as I got up off that table. Not just because my eye was fixed, but because I FACED DOWN A LIFELONG FEAR.
Sometimes I rock (with a lot of help from friends and family).

After breakfast on Saturday morning, the kids and I headed to the gym. They play in the Kids Club with their cousin, Dominic, while my sister, Tami and I do a cardio class. Works for all of us.
On the way to the gym American Pie came on the radio. Reed especially loves this song because of its association in his mind with Star Wars (remember this post?). He also loves to say, fiercely, "This'll be the day that I DIE!"
So my perfect moment was the three of us singing at the top of our lungs about the chevy and the levee and the whiskey and rye. As I sing with Tessa and Reed I think of the future. As I listen to the song I think about the past -- significant events in the rock & roll genre, 1959-1971 (much of which precedes me).
Swirl together the past and the future into one moment and it was simply perfect.
Sharing it with you. Sing loudly.

==================================== Reed's first mother moved out of state three years ago, and has since gotten married and had two children. We hear from her sporadically, not often. Life is busy for her with a toddler and a newborn.
Still, it makes me sad to see Reed's heart sink when he doesn't get a response to his voicemail or email messages to her.
This weekend we got an email from her saying that she'd been visiting family in our area, but due to the flu (her son came down with it), she was unable to put us on her schedule.
She sent photos of her family, her 2 year old son and her 6 month old daughter -- Reed's half-siblings. He was so excited to see proof of his big-brothership!
I know I have no control over this, but my wish for 2010 would be for Reed to have more contact with his first parents.
Putting it out to the Universe. Thanks for this perfect moment for him, and, greedy mom that I am, I ask for more.

==================================== The Wii brought a gleeful perfect moment to my son, Reed. He spent all of Christmas morning plotting just exactly how this new addition would change his life. He angled to get the Wii set up in the basement, where he and Tessa have their DVDs and old-style game system set up (not quite Atari, but close).
When I told him that the Wii would be set up in the family room -- the room where Daddy watches sports and where Mom works -- his plans for unfettered access were dashed. He heaped all his frustration and anger on me, yelling how now he'd NEVER get to play and then huffing up to his room. I think he may have accused me of ruining his life.
For newcomers to this blog, let me spell out that Reed is ultra-uber-super-duper sweet. Watching him pull a Tessa -- well, it was hard to keep a straight face. Still, my heart ached for him and his disappointment.
Daddy went up to talk with Reed and explain the placement of the Wii. Soon, all was right in the world again. Reed apologized to me for yelling and "being mean."
Roger pulled me aside and surreptitiously brought me up to Reed's room. In the time Reed was there sulking, he drew this picture of me on the side of a box: Roger had asked Reed what it was. "Mommy in a smasher." See the boulder-smashers? See the arrows showing the smashers crushing Mommy?
Maybe some of you are horrified, but Roger and I were hysterically amused. It was the perfect release after an imperfect moment.
And I will be using the Wii Fit Plus to strengthen my Smasher-repelling muscles. ==================================== To participate in Perfect Moment Monday:
